High School Success Stories
Jacob has ADHD and used to believe, “I’m just not as smart as my older sister…”.
When Jacob came to Stoke, he was an average student at a high school. His older sister had been an academic high-achiever, accepted to Yale University after graduating from the same high school. Jacob's academic difficulties stemmed in part from ADHD, and the constant comparisons to his sister took a further toll on his confidence and self-esteem.
Jacob's academic consultant helped him improve his SAT score by deliberately mastering one skill or concept at a time. His math, reading, and other academic abilities began showing improvement, but Jacob wasn't convinced until his score jumped more than 250 points.
Jacob's unproductive beliefs and constant self-criticism had kept him from recognizing his own ability; once he saw proof of his intelligence, however, he and his academic consultant were able to improve his SAT score by 690 points over the next 3 months. He jumped from the 44th percentile to the 96th on the SAT, got accepted into his first choice of colleges, and, most importantly, became empowered. With the help of his academic consultant, Jacob shed the restrictive assumptions and negative self-talk that prevented his success.
Jessica was an above average student whose standardized test scores didn’t reflect her true abilities.
Jessica came to Stoke after earning a 23 on the ACT, which was much too low for the competitive university where she was hoping to enroll that fall. Although diligent, neither Jessica nor her peers viewed her as any great intellect.
However, Jessica's self-esteem improved as soon as she realized that her academic consultant's primary purpose was to help her master the test. After improving her ACT score by just 3 points, Jessica decided she was going to shock every student, teacher, and administrator at her competitive private high school by earning the highest score in her class.
After preparing with her academic counselor, Jessica earned a 35 on the ACT--the highest score in her entire graduating class! In fact, Jessica didn't just earn the best score in her class; she earned one of the best scores in the country. A 35 on the ACT places Jessica in the 99.7th percentile of U.S. students. In a room of 1,000, only 2 or 3 of her peers would have scores that high or higher.
Now, Jessica is a freshman at the university of her choice. She was among the first to be accepted from her class.
